Hatcher Pass 2012 – Day 1

Day 1 in Hatcher Pass

On Sunday, Elijah and I drove up to Hatcher Pass to check out independence and see if it looked open.  Unfortunately Independence looks to be a few more weeks before it clears out.  Crucifix and a few other boulder are good, but mostly there still a bit of snow.

After checking out the snowpack at Independence, we decided to go back down and hike into Archangel. The road was dry and Aldershade, Jurassic, and Drive By boulders looked pretty good (except for the problem Drive By which has a bit of a puddle under it). If you’re willing to hike, the Indianhead Boulders were clear. We also saw guys biking down from Reed Lakes as well, so I imagine the trail may be clear for quite a ways back there as well.

Elijah and I were psyched to find something new so we continued hiking into upper Archangel till we hit snow about 3 miles in.  We cut left off the road and found some nice small boulders just off the road.  Being short on time we only cleaned one boulder, but there are 3 more nice looking boulders just off the road and plenty more bigger ones just across the creek. We cleaned and did 5 new lines in total: a new v1, v2, v4sds, v6sds, and v0 (from left to right in the picture below).  We’ll have to figure out names later :)
